Sanctuary Choir

More about Joining the Sanctuary Choir

How can I join the choir?
We accept new members all year long, but the best times to join are at the beginning of the church year and right after Christmas or Easter, since the repertoire is new at those times. Membership is open to anyone who can carry a tune and takes seriously the commitment of regular attendance.

What kind of commitment are you talking about?
Rehearsals are from 7:00-9:30 p.m. on Wednesdays throughout the church year, and regular attendance and punctuality are expected. In addition, the choir meets promptly at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday for a final rehearsal of that day’s anthem(s). Special rehearsals may be called as needed when major works are being presented. All members should plan to attend the choir retreat, held annually on the weekend before Labor Day.

The director may make exceptions at her discretion, but generally, if you miss a Wednesday rehearsal, you may not be permitted to sing that Sunday.

Do I have to audition?
Yes, but only to familiarize the director with your voice so that she can seat you in the appropriate section. Make an appointment with the director if you would like to audition.

Do I need to have a musical education?
Being in the Sanctuary Choir is a musical education. Obviously a background in music is helpful, but it is not a requirement. We have many members who have never studied music or sung in a choir before, and even the most seasoned musician will agree that there is always more to learn.

How about a "test drive"?
All Wednesday evening rehearsals are open to the public. Whether you want to sing along in a section or just listen, you are invited to join us if you would like to get a feel for our working style and decide whether membership is right for you. Please contact the director beforehand so that music and seating can be made available.

What if I love music but can't carry a tune?
There are other ways to support music at SFBC besides singing with us. You might wish to join the Bell Choir or, if you are an experienced instrumentalist, offer to play in worship. You can spread the word about the choir concerts by helping with publicity. In addition, we welcome assistance with concerts with such tasks as ushering, setting up and breaking down, and planning and hosting receptions. Please contact the director if you have interested in helping along these lines.
