Other Programs and Ministries

Seattle First Baptist has a large and diverse program.  Following is a listing of the various organizations and their areas of responsibility.

Adult Education Commission
Adult education at SFBC has a mission of engaging individuals in what it means to follow Christ in today's world. Primary areas of interest include Bible studies, social justice issues, and personal spiritual growth. Classes meet at 9:30 AM on Sundays with a continental breakfast provided.  Check our Adult Learning page and Calendar for information about current classes.

Children, Families and Young Adults Commission
This commission strives to meet the needs of children, welcome families into the full life of the church, strengthen intergenerational relationships, and engage young people in meaningful ways.  The program encompasses worship, education, programming, networking and outreach.  Check our Calendar for current offerings.  Contact Pastor Anita Peebles for further information.

Membership and Engagement Commission
This commission focuses on welcoming and engaging people in the SFBC community.  Among other events, they offer Explore!, a three-week series through which people wanting to know more about the church meet with SFBC pastors and members to explore our values and beliefs, and to learn how they might more deeply engage with the church. Check our Calendar page for information about current offerings.  Check in with the Welcome Table in Fellowship Hall during Coffee Hour for  further information.

Outreach Commission
This commission has responsibility for extending the personal and fiscal resources of SFBC in loving response to local, regional, and global human needs.  A monthly Fellowship Offering is taken to support organizations serving our neighbors in need.  Some of the organizations supported by SFBC include:
  • I-Best Program at Seattle Central Community College
  • Mary's Place
  • Neighborhood House
  • The Bridge Project
  • Recovery Cafe
  • Hilltop House
  • Loaves and Fishes

Social Justice Ministries
Affiliated with the Outreach Commission, "SOJUS" offers a wide variety of events focused on ecology, peacemaking, and activism with a spiritual foundation.  Check our Calendar for information about current offerings.

Retreat Ministry
Seattle First Baptist offers retreats focused on specific groups a few times a year.  Currently we have a Senior Adults Retreat in the summer and a Women's Retreat in the fall.  Click here for more information.

Music Commission
This commission coordinates an extensive program with offerings for adults, children, beginners, and experienced musicians.  See the Music pages for further information.

Worship Commission
This commission provides support for worship at SFBC.  They sponsor the ushers, prepare for Communion, decorate the Sanctuary for various events and seasons, prepare and provide floral arrangements, and coordinate with the Music Commission to prepare for holidays.

Personnel Commission
This commission supports the staff of SFBC.  It is responsible for compensation, evaluation, and all other phases of human resource management.

Church Operations Commission
This commission is responsible for the maintenance of our facilities, including all three SFBC buildings.  They also oversee the general administrative functions of the staff.  Contact Darren Hochstedler, Church Administrator, for further information.

Stewardship Commission
This commission has oversight of SFBC finances, assuring that cash is counted accurately, that monthly accounting reports are understood, and that budgetary control is properly and transparently implemented.  An Investment Committee manages the church's endowments.

ABW Ministries
American Baptist Women Ministries is organized into three circles, each with their own programs and ministries.  The group also sponsors events for the entire congregation on occasion.

Drama Group
Seattle First Baptist has had a longterm Drama Ministry under the direction of Joanne Hjort. She has retired from her leadership role, and future plans for the Drama Group are TBD at this time.
