“Focus On Resistance” with Lupe Carlos

Lupe Carlos III: Photojournalism, Activism, and Art
Sunday, April 12 at 9:30am in the Parlor

Many of you have probably seen Lupe with camera in hand at some point. But did you know that his photography artistry ranges from photojournalism of local rallies and protests to nature photography to digital photographic art? Lupe will share a slideshow of his work, talk about his process and the relationships he’s developed through his art, and answer questions. Whether the art is a crow with a treasure chest, local leaders calling for justice, or portraits of dear friends, it will be good to hear from Lupe about how he sees the world.

Artist Statement

I photograph social justice movements as an act of witnessing. From gatherings of 3 voices to marches of 100,000. Based in Seattle, my camera has been a key to the city, opening doors into communities I might never have encountered otherwise.

There is something deeply spiritual for me in photographing people who are working for justice: a sense of bearing witness to more than a moment, but to a continuum of resistance. In these spaces, the act of making an image becomes a form of respect, an acknowledgment of the strength and intention carried by those in action.

I donate my images to the organizations that present these actions because the work does not belong to me alone. It belongs to the people who show up, who risk being seen. The diversity and intersectionality within these movements are central to my practice. I aim to reflect the fullness of who is present and why they have come together.

As a photographer, I am aware of the responsibility that comes with framing these moments. I honor humanity over spectacle and dignity over exploitation. Each photograph is both a record and an invitation to recognize the human reality behind the movement. Through this work, I contribute to a visual archive that affirms this collective spirit that will not be ignored.
