“The Rise of European music” is the title of a pivotal book by Reinhard Strohm, describing the years from the end of Ars Nova to the first half of the 15th century as the first time when music has a European, international dimension. It is a fascinating story which connects musical traditions previously more isolated. After the council of Constance, English, Flemish, Italian, northern and southern French musicians know each other much better and borrow several elements from each other. Johannes Tinctoris at the end of the 15th century has the picture very clear: the English were the fathers of the new art. Tracing briefly Italian and French music (Francesco Landini, Solage) which pre-existed this first generation we will then move to Johannes Ciconia (the first great Flemish to walk this path), then to the English John Dunstable and John Plummer, before finishing with Dufay, father of a new art which will be imitated until the end of the 15th century.
