Meeting Jesus at the Movies “Allegiance”
January 11 & 18, 9:30am in the Parlor
In November, several members of our congregation did a presentation at the 9:30 hour on a Sunday about their experiences on a pilgrimage to the site of the Minidoka incarceration camp in Idaho where Japanese-Americans were held during World War II. This stimulated great discussion, and we left wanting more. On January 11 and January 18 from 9:30-10:45am, join Cherry Johnson in the Parlor, to continue the conversation by watching a movie together.
George Takei’s family was taken from their home and “interned” during the war. This had a profound effect on him, and as a way of honoring his father and ensuring that history was not forgotten, he inspired a heartfelt and provocative Broadway musical called Allegiance which explores the impact of this incarceration on multiple generations of one family. Takei plays a man based on his grandfather. A performance of the musical was filmed, and we will be watching that film in two parts on those Sundays, with time for discussing the themes of how horrific prejudice impacts individuals, families and communities.
