Paid Choral Internship - Aug. 26, 2017 - June 10, 2018
Seattle First Baptist offers four paid choral internships for enrolled graduate and undergraduate students or recent graduates continuing musical studies interested in being vocal leaders in a church setting. The choral intern must have good sight-reading skills, excellent vocal production, and be a positive, supportive personality within the section. Learn about church music ministry as you sharpen your leadership skills.
The 55-voice choir sings repertoire from Bach to Bernstein, and from chant to gospel music. Past major works include the Duruflé Requiem, Bach Magnificat in D and Jenkins’ Peace- makers. We are a welcoming and affirming church. Read the job description below. |

Job Description
The Seattle First Baptist Church Choir seeks accomplished choral musicians/solo vocalists to serve as choir interns.
The internship program has two goals:
Interns will report to the choir director. Duties and responsibilities include:

The Seattle First Baptist choir consists of approximately 55 singers of various ages and levels of musical expertise. Our church is a welcoming and affirming congregation. In fact, our mission statement calls upon members to know no circles of exclusion. As part of that philosophy, we welcome all levels of singers as part of our group and try to help them to grow musically as they are able. We enjoy singing all types of religious music, from Bach’s Magnificat and Bernstein’s Mass to tuneful church anthems and gospel music.
The internship program has two goals:
- To provide practical church choral music experience to student musicians
- To provide musical support and leadership to choir members
Interns will report to the choir director. Duties and responsibilities include:
- providing singing leadership at all regular Wednesday evening rehearsals, Sunday morning rehearsals and services, special rehearsals, and concerts during the church year
- providing general musical leadership for members of the section (through modeling good vocal technique and accurate sight reading), and helping to answer logistical and musical questions
- arriving on time for rehearsals, church services, and concerts, fully prepared so that other singers can learn from the intern and rely on his or her musical leadership
- taking note of instructions in rehearsal such as phrasing, breathing, pronunciation, etc. in order to support others in the section
- taking note of problem areas in music that need more rehearsal
- leading sectional rehearsals during established rehearsal times, in collaboration with the section leader or choir director, when asked
- Monthly half-hour meeting with the choir director
- striving for personal artistic growth and attempting to foster musical growth in members of the section by being a source of positive musical energy
Desired qualifications and skills:
- Current student receiving formal training in music or music education at the college or graduate level with a vocal/choral emphasis
- excellent sight reading, musicianship, and vocal production skills
- ability to lead section rehearsals and sing solos from time to time
- willingness and ability to be a collaborative, tactful, and supportive role model for people of all ages and musical skill levels
