Here's a taste of what happened at Seattle First Baptist Church from October 2016 to January 2017.


Sunday, Jan. 29

Dr. Bob Reid wrapped up his Adult Learning series on the Epiphany texts by discussing the Sermon on the Mount. Pastor Tim Phillips gathered us and prayed. Metta Williams invited us to attend Queer Bingo, a benefit for Diverse Harmony, on Feb. 4. Megan Walker did the Time with Children. The choir sang in Hebrew. Theologian in Residence Patricia Hunter gave a powerful sermon based on the Song of Micah.

Leadership Retreat - Jan. 27 and 28

About 20 lay leaders and staff met at Camp Burton on Vashon Island for our annual Leadership Retreat. President Jim Singletary and team led the group through a rich experience including discussion, singing, worship, meditation, and delicious meals.

Annual Meeting Sunday, Jan. 22

Annual Meeting
The 147th Annual Meeting of Seattle First Baptist had a busy agenda. All items were passed unanimously. The Annual Report was presented. A quorum of members was easily reached for the meeting. Metta Williams gave her final report as Treasurer. Outgoing President Sue Ross presented Volunteer Recognition Awards to Jane Herness and Phil Mortenson. A search committee was elected to seek an Associate Pastor. Angie Buysse presented the 2017 Budget. Margaret Norton-Arnold outlined the expenditures for the Romney Endowment this year. Mike Zaugg presented nominations for church officers and commissions. Sue Ross passed the microphone to incoming President Jim Singletary, who thanked Sue for her leadership over the past two years. 
Adult Learning and Worship
Dr. Bob Reid continued his Adult Learning series on the texts of Epiphany. Representatives from our church Commissions participated in worship. The choir and congregation sang robustly on hymns. Lee Hart welcomed us on behalf of Church Home Operations. Jim Ginn gathered us with words about Music. David Young of Membership and Engagement invited us to welcome each other. Linda Zaugg introduced a new member, Erica Miles. Samara Hoag told us about the work of Outreach during Invitations to Involvement. Patrick Green of did the Time with Children, and added some water from the Jordan River to the baptistry. Pastor Tim Phillips preached from the water before baptizing Paul Rohrbach.

Women's March on Seattle - Saturday, Jan. 21

Many members of our community participated in the Women's March on Seattle, along with more than 130,000 other people locally and millions around the world. About half of the people who attended worship on the following Sunday walked in the march. These photos are from Facebook and were taken by a variety of people. Thank you all!

Martin Luther King Jr. Sunday, Jan. 15

Bob Reid continued his Adult Learning series with a class titled Our Epiphany Concern: "Come and See" Stories of Believing is Seeing.

Our guest organist Christopher Glenn led us in song. Theologian in Residence Patricia Hunter greeted us and prayed. Jim Singletary, vice president of the congregation, urged everyone to attend next week's annual meeting. Pastor David Kile called for the Offering. Heather Dodge did the Time with Children. Bruce Chittick preached.

After worship, we had the first Senior Adult Luncheon of the new year. Mariah Kaye presented Exercise for Seniors.

Epiphany and Goodbyes - Sunday, Jan. 8, 2017

Goodbye to Ned Allyn Parker and Michelle Horsley
After worship the Fellowship Hall and Parlor were packed with people who gathered to wish Ned and Michelle well as they head for the East Coast. Tears and good wishes flowed freely. Margaret Norton-Arnold hosted the event. Jim Ginn, Toni Fields and Sue Ross made presentations to the couple. Ned spoke and Michelle sang a song she wrote for SFBC and performed on New Year's Eve. The following video tribute kicked off the festivities.
Epiphany Worship and Adult Learning
Rev. Dr. Bob Reid got the day started with the first of four Adult Learning sessions focusing on the Epiphany texts in the lectionary. The title of today's class was "Our Ephiphany Concern: Repent! Is that a Threat or a Promise?"

During worship we commemorated the visit of the Magi, the flight into Egypt, and the slaughter of the innocents. Brent Marble, Linda Zaugg and Jim Segaar sang the parts of the Magi. Donna Ward, Toni Fields and Patrick Green led an Epiphany Canticle and Reading. Sue Ross did the Invitations to Involvement and Cherry Johnson read "Song on the Feast of Epiphany." Eric Jeffords and Lewis Thompson performed an offertory in honor of Ned Allyn Parker and Michelle Horsley. Pastor Tim Phillips preached and sent Ned and Michelle off with a blessing.

New Year's Day Worship and Communion - Sunday, Jan. 1, 2017

Cherry Johnson began our new year with a poem of Blessing. It was the last service in their positions for Pastor Ned Allyn Parker and organist Michelle Horsley. They presided over a heart-felt worship service and intimate communion. Pastor Tim Phillips prayed with us. Aaron Burkhalter read scripture.Sami Hoag told us about one of the beneficiaries for the Fellowship offering. The service ended with Michelle and Ned singing Auld Lang Syne.

New Year's Eve Cabaret - Saturday, Dec. 31, 2016

Thank you to Michelle Horsley, Patrick Green, Rick Hanson, and everyone else who put on a wonderful dinner and show on New Year's Eve. A good time was had by all.

Christmas Day - Sunday, Dec. 25

Pastor Ned Allyn Parker greeted some special fans. Michelle Horsley and Patrick Green invited everyone to come to the New Year's Eve Cabaret. Pastor Tim Phillips used candles from Bethlehem to help set the mood.

Christmas Eve - Dec. 24

Children and families set up the manger scene, sang in the Children and Family Choir, lit candles, and did readings. Kate Kile and Karin Zaugg Black read. Pastor Ned Allyn Parker preached. Vicky Thomas lead the Sanctuary Choir and musicians. Pastor Tim Phillips spread candlelight around the sanctuary - figuratively and literally.

Sunday, Dec. 18 - Fourth Sunday in Advent

Do-It-Yourself Christmas Pageant
Pastor Ned Allyn Parker led us through one last DIY Pageant, the sixth annual edition, with a host of manger animals, shepherds, angels, magi, Baby Jesus, and a bunch of stars playing Pokemon. The morning started of with our annual Christmas Breakfast, time with Santa, and lots of fooling around.

Mike and Linda Zaugg shared their reflections on visiting Bethlehem in November. Tim Williams lit the Advent Calendar. Annaliese Terminello sang the Advent Canticle. Pastor Ned Allyn Parker wore a robe given to him by Dr. Ervin Herness. Patrick Green led the Time With Children. Olivia Bodden sang O Come, O Come, Emmanuel with Michelle Horsley. Pastor Tim Phillips prayed with us. Theologian in Residence Patricia Hunter preached.
Christmas Concert
Vicky Thomas and Michelle Horsley led The Sanctuary Choir, orchestra, and soloists in Love Across Borders - An All-American Christmas. Music from North and South America filled the sanctuary.

Sunday, Dec. 11 - Third Sunday in Advent

Moments from Worship and More
On the Third Sunday of Advent, Harriet Platts led us in the Advent Canticle. Joan and John Benner spoke about visiting the Wilderness during their recent trip to Israel with Pastor Tim Phillips and Rabbi Olivier Ben Haim. Vicky Thomas shared Invitations to Involvement, and reminded people of next weekend's Christmas concert and other activities. Melissa Thirloway sang during the Offertory. Susan Blythe-Goodman did the Time with Children. Pastor David Kile prayed with us, the Sanctuary Choir performed an anthem, and Pastor Tim Phillips preached.

In Adult Learning, Aaron Burkhalter and two speakers from the Real Change speakers' bureau presented about homelessness.

Saturday, Dec. 10

The first orchestra rehearsal for this year's Christmas concert, Love Across Borders - An All-American Christmas, brought together the choir and musicians from multiple cultures in the Americas. 

Wednesday, Dec. 7

Patricia Warming presented a program titled Advent: An initiatory jmourney from darkness to light after dinner. She will present about A Soulful Christmas next week.

Second Sunday in Advent, Dec. 4

Moments from Worship
We visited the banks of the River Jordan during our Advent canticle and reflection, as we lit the Second Candle of Advent. Catherine Fales shared her thoughts about visiting the Jordan last month. Nancy Roberts-Brown brought us Invitations to Involvement. We had a special reader for the scripture lesson. The Intergenerational Choir and The Sanctuary Choir combined on the anthem. Patrick Green interviewed a special guest, John the Baptist, during the Time with Children. Jim Ginn and Michelle Horsley combined their talents during the offertory. Pastor Ned Allyn Parker prayed with us. Pastor Tim Phillips preached and celebrated Communion with Linda Zaugg. We used a special chalice that was given to Seattle First Baptist by Byzantine Christians in Bethlehem.
Adult Learning
Jim Ginn, Renna Pierce, and Mark Jensen joined Jim Segaar for our final class in the series centered on our theme for Advent, Learning from our past without living in it. They shared stories and lessons they learned during their time at SFBC.

First Sunday in Advent, Nov. 27

We began our observance of Advent by focusing on Jerusalem. The choir sang a canticle, Jerusalem, My Happy Home, and Atit Marmer shared a reflection about his visit to Jerusalem in recent years. Jim Segaar presented an Advent Reflection. Aaron Burkhalter discussed being prepared during the Time With Children. Theologian In Residence Patricia Hunter led us in prayer and read scripture. Pastor Ned Allyn Parker preached.
Adult Learning
Jim Segaar led the first of two discussions exploring our theme for Advent: Learning from our past without living in it.

Youth and Family (and Thanksgiving) Sunday, Nov. 20

Thank you to all the youth and families who led us in worship today in a very special service of thanksgiving.
Adult Learning and Bake Sale
Today in Adult Learning we wrapped up the Painting the Stars series. After worship the American Baptist Women's groups hosted their annual bake sale.

Sunday, Nov. 13

Atit Marmer introduced this week's installment of Painting the Stars in Adult Learning. Pastor Ned Allyn Parker gathered us and offered a blessing on participants in the upcoming trip to Israel (represented by Pastor Tim Phillips). Following a Time with Children, Paul Fellner and Michelle Horsley combined on a moving rendition of Imagine by John Lennon. Paul is our Maintenance and Facilities Supervisor, as well as a Seahawks fan. Patricia Hunter led us in prayer. Pastor Tim Phillips delivered a powerful sermon, which was followed by singing We Shall Overcome.

All Saints Sunday, Nov. 6

Moments from Worship

At the beginning of the service Pastor David Kile lead a remembrance of those who have died in the past 12 months. Aaron Burkhalter led the Time with Children. Pastor Ned Allyn Parker read Psalm 146 as an invitation to prayer. We read the scripture lesson together. Pastor Tim Phillips delivered a moving sermon. Theologian in Residence Patricia Hunter joined Tim to serve Communion. Annaliese Stelzer shared information about Food for All, one of the non-profits supported by Seattle First Baptist.

Following worship, Pastor Ned Allyn Parker and organist Michelle Horsley announced that they are leaving Seattle First Baptist at the end of the year. Ned has accepted a position with Andover Newton at Yale Divinity School. Sue Ross, president of the congregation, said a brief prayer at the conclusion of the announcement.
Explore! and Adult Learning

Today was the first session of the latest Explore! series, which is designed to help people learn more about Seattle First Baptist. It is sponsored by the Membership Commission and the pastors and lay leaders present the information.

In Adult Learning, the Painting the Stars series continued with thought-provoking video and lively discussion.

Reformation Sunday, Oct. 30

Family Halloween Lunch
The gym was filled with delicious smells, costumes, the sound of bouncing children on Sunday.
Moments from Worship
Megan Walker did a seasonal Time with Children. Pastor Ned Allyn Parker preached. Gretchen Champoux prayed with us. Naomi Simila-Dickinson read scripture. We welcomed three new members. Trumpet player Bruce Staelens played throughout the service.
Adult Learning
The series Painting the Stars, hosted by Atit Marmer and Steve Smith, continued today. Here are a few quotes from the session:

Women's Retreat, Oct. 28-30

Karen Carlos shared these photos from this year's Women's Retreat. "We had a wonderful weekend at Rainbow Lodge," she wrote. The theme of the retreat was Turn, Turn, Turn, Seasons and Circles in Women's Spirituality.

Companis Sunday, Oct. 23

Worship and Lunch
​Companis staff members and workers led us in worship on Sunday. Gary Davis gathered us. Tim Patrick did the Time with Children with an assist from Gary. Abid Bhatti read scripture and shared about his experiences. Atit Marmer sang during the offertory. Peter Jabin and Lee Campbell brought messages.Tim Phillips led us in prayer. The choir anthem included Brian Lew on viola and soloists Katie Kelley & Eric Jeffords. 

After worship, the congregation and community members celebrated during a luncheon sponsored by Companis. Renna Pierce received the Janet G. Newell Award for Community Service, honoring her part in founding Companis. Executive Director Gary Davis, President Emeritus Craig R.J. Darling, and Board President Shawn Aronow presided.

Pledge Sunday, Oct. 16

Moments from Worship and more...
We had an energetic service for Pledge Sunday. Theologian in Residence Patricia Hunter started things off with an enthusiastic welcome. Cherry Johnson did Invitations for Involvement, and invited women to register for the upcoming Women's Retreat. Megan Walker talked about our "special day" during Time with Children. Annaliese Terminello led the stewardship canticle. Pastor Tim Phillips preached a rousing message, and Fellowship Hall was filled with people enjoying lunch.
Adult Learning
Atit Marmer and Steve Smith hosted the first in a series of classes titled Painting the Stars. The videos are part of the Living the Questions material. Pastor Tim will be back for Adult Learning next week, and the series will continue for four more weeks after that.

Burrito Roll - Saturday, Oct. 15

About 400 burritos were rolled on Saturday to help feed the hungry. Thank you to the organizers and volunteers who gather every month to help feed our hungry neighbors.

Evergreen Sunday, Oct. 9

Storytelling Slam
After worship the Parlor filled up with people to listen to and tell personal stories in an event sponsored by Creativity Connections. Pastor Ned Allyn Parker was the host.
Moments from Worship
​Pastor Tim Phillips gathered us and introduced several guests in town for the Evergreen Association annual meeting. Danny de la Cruz encouraged people to volunteer as ushers and Pat Kile brought us a stewardship message. We celebrated our stewardship theme, For Everyone Born, A Place at the Table with a canticle focused on religious diversity. Patrick Green led the Time with Children. Pastor Ned Allyn Parker prayed. Theologian in Residence Patricia Hunter preached a rousing sermon on "an attitude of gratitude."
Adult Learning
Pastor Tim Phillips continued his series on Evolutionary Theology and Revolutionary Worship. He introduced a special guest, Rick Mixon, pastor of First Baptist Church in Palo Alto, CA. Rick was an intern at Seattle First Baptist with Gus Hintz and Walt Pulliam.

World Communion Sunday, Oct. 2

In Adult Learning, Pastor Tim Phillips spoke to a full house in the Parlor about Revolutionary Worship - Belonging and Believing. During worship, Pastor Ned Allyn Parker gathered us. Aaron Burkhalter and our guest Mona Han talked about refugees during the Time with Children. We continued to celebrate A Place at the Table. Metta Willams shared thoughts about Stewardship. Mona Han of the Coalition for Refugees from Burma talked about World Communion as Solidarity. Pastor Tim preached and did communion with our guest.
