Partner Organizations

Seattle First Baptist works with many other organizations to fulfill our mission to walk in the way of Jesus Christ and to love and care for our neighbors.  This page lists independent organizations who work closely with SFBC.

Companis

Picture
Companis is a Seattle-based nonprofit organization that addresses gaps in quality professional staffing experienced by nonprofit agencies due to budget limitations and the growing requests for service provision among our neighbors in crisis.

Companis matches professional volunteer and community workers with nonprofit agencies in need of staffing assistance.  Companis offers an opportunity for service to individuals who seek to work for justice among our neighbors. In addition to a core group of full-time volunteer professionals who commit to working for client agencies for at least one year (and who may receive a stipend), Companis also serves as a matchmaker to connect talented part-time volunteers from the community with nonprofits who need their specialized skills.

The agencies helped by Companis may be young and not yet financially self-supporting, or they may be established agencies trying to expand services or begin pilot projects.

In 1994 Companis was organized based on a model developed at the Esther Davis Center in Chicago.  Their founding Executive Director, Craig R. J. Darling was recruited by Seattle First Baptist Church (SFBC) to establish this model in Seattle, and was called to be the full time Executive Director.  Companis was organized as its own 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, giving it greater latitude within the broader community.  SFBC provides financial support to Companis as the Companis Workers and Staff extends an outreach of concern, care, and advocacy among our neighbors.  Companis is a secular non-religious organization.

Hilltop House

Picture
Hilltop House is a nonprofit corporation which owns a 125-unit apartment building. It is an equal opportunity facility that provides housing to low-income individuals 62 years of age and older through the Department of Housing and Urban Development's 202 Program (HUD 202). Residency is open to all qualified, eligible persons without regard to race, color, creed, national origin, handicap status, religion, familial status, political persuasion, sex or sexual preference.

Seattle First Baptist was instrumental in building Hilltop House and remains a committed partner to Hilltop's mission.

Trinity Thrift Shop

Picture
The Thrift Shop is an ecumenical outreach ministry established in partnership with Trinity Parish Church and has operated continually since 1981. It is co-managed and staffed by volunteers of both Trinity Parish and Seattle First Baptist. Originally housed in the basement of Trinity Parish Church, since 2001 the shop has been located on the corner of 8th Avenue and Cherry Street in the former Parish rectory.

The Thrift Shop provides free clothing and household items to the community through a voucher system, as well as offering an attractive shopping experience for thrift shop devotees. On average, 65 persons a week are served through the voucher system. Income from the Thrift Shop is used to support nine downtown social service agencies, as well as both sponsoring churches. The shop is a flourishing enterprise that continues to meet the needs of the immediate community and beyond.

The Thrift Shop is open from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. four days a week (Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday). Donations may be delivered to the shop during regular business hours or on Tuesday between 10:00 a.m. and 12 noon. When the shop is closed, donations may be left at the either church office.

Those interested in volunteering at The Thrift Shop are invited to contact the Thrift Shop Manager, Carol Webb, at 206.264.1698.

Bet Alef Meditative Synagogue is an inclusive spiritual community practicing an evolving Judaism as a path to awakening.  It fosters a Jewish spirituality for all ages that supports each individual, is realized in community, and manifests itself in our world as peaceful acts of greater compassion and love.

Bet Alef encourages each person to discover new relevance in Jewish text, ritual and social action through integration of mind, body and spirit.  It practices Jewish meditation as a way to explore the mystical path of Judaism.

Bet Alef shares space with Seattle First Baptist, and the two organizations share activities from time to time.
