Retreats

At our best, we become Sabbath for one another

~Wayne Muller

Retreats are a kind of Sabbath — a time apart:  apart from our everyday lives, perhaps apart from the city, sometimes apart from the people with whom we generally spend our days, maybe apart from what we are used to, apart from noise, apart from loneliness, apart from the news, from stress, from obligations, apart from what we know.  They are also a time of coming together — to learn, to play, to grow, to listen, to remember, to feel, laugh, engage our spiritual selves intentionally, to embrace the Mystery.  Jesus spent a good deal of time apart – by himself and with his friends.  As followers of the Way of Jesus, we do the same.

With a variety of retreats and opportunities to choose from, we welcome all ages and walks of life to join us. We have lifestage-targeted retreats, as well as topical retreats around issues such as immigration justice and prayer. Each retreat is a unique experience to go deeper with our relationships, our faith, and our community.

Oil lamps may be a thing of the past (so many things are!). But our lives are a little like them. When there’s enough fuel, we light up the world. When we are depleted we fade, we falter, we begin to doubt our worth. One way to re-fuel is to retreat. Get away. Stare at a mountain, a tree, a brook, some fish, a garden. Have a great conversation. Sit on the deck and soak up the sun or revel in the shade. Listen to the birds. Sing. Play. Take a nap. Hang out around the fire. Do some crafting. Go for a hike. LIVE IN THE AWARENESS OF THE SACRED FOR A WHILE! Gradually, your light will become brighter.

Maybe you’re not sure if you qualify as a “senior.” Well . . . if you’re asking the question, you probably do. And if you are old enough to get the senior discount at IHOP or willing to get the reduced-price ticket for seniors to an arts or sporting event . . . then you fit the bill, and we’d love to have you!

Rainbow Lodge is a beautiful place. The rooms have twin beds and a sink. A shared bathroom with showers is just down the hall. The views are spectacular. So are the smells and sounds of the forested environment around you! Family style meals are served. There will be some programming and a whole lot of time to just “be” in nature, and in community. There will be plenty of opportunities for personal and spiritual growth, as well as laughter and camaraderie. Retreats are a great way to make new friends and strengthen long-term relationships.

Sabbath - a Time Apart

…apart from our everyday lives, perhaps apart from the city, sometimes apart from the people with whom we generally spend our days, maybe apart from what we are used to, apart from noise, apart from loneliness, apart from the news, from stress, from obligations, apart from what we know

Coming Together

We gather to learn, to play, to grow, to listen, to remember, to feel, laugh, engage our spiritual selves intentionally, to embrace the Mystery.

All ages - All Stages

Different people want and need different things from retreats.

Our retreats highlight different aspects of our shared lives together – intergenerational, young adults, women & seniors, or topical (like prayer, the environment, or immigration). Regardless of what the retreat is about or who it might be geared for – our arms are open to welcome you!

Be nourished - body and soul

Many of our in-person retreats are also complete with delicious nourishment – in both food and spiritual form. At our Intergenerational Retreat, these s’mores filled our bellies as our stories filled our hearts.

Words of Life

Our retreats allows us time and space to fill our hearts and minds with words of love and life. Between craft activities and writing times, you’ll be invited to join others in communal expression.

All Ages Welcome Here!

Snow!

Our Winter Snow Retreat always brings together the entire SFBC church family with fun, food, games and laughter.

The snow
began here
this morning and all day
continued, its white
rhetoric everywhere
calling us back to why, how;
whence such beauty and what
the meaning . . .

–Mary Oliver, from First Snow

Planting Good Things in Creation and in our Lives

Now the whole earth is at rest and at peace, singing for joy!  Even the pine trees . . . rejoice!

Isaiah 14:7-8

Young... or just Young at Heart?

What is laughter?  What is laughter?

It is God waking up!  O it is God waking up!

–Hafiz, from I Heard God Laughing: Renderings of Hafiz – Daniel Ladinsky
